Keepsake Box

How about making a keepsake box for someone you love?

I have made these boxes for both of my granddaughters and my grandson for their baptism day gift when they were 8 years old. It gives them a special place to safely store the things that are important to them. 

I begin with a white photo box. You could certainly start with any color or pattern. I like using solids so that I can personalize them for the child. I always add some kind of tie or catch to give the box a private feel.

The girls boxes have been done in all white with lots of frills!

I have added frames to the top to frame the child's name and the date of their baptism in a pretty font. The frame was trimmed in eyelet lace to match the trim on the boxes lid. A white silk ribbon was glued to the bottom of the box and it came around and tied into a beautiful bow on the top over the frame.

The box pictured above: I made a lace flower using three different widths of eyelet lace. I hot glued the flower to one end of the ribbon. I placed a piece of velcro on the bottom of the flower/ribbon end and the opposite velcro piece to the other end of the ribbon.  The ribbon went around the box to hold the box tightly closed.

For a boy, I started with a white box but I added the first letter in his name using a big wooden white letter (like you can find in your craft stores) that was just smaller than the lid of the box. I used modge podge to cover the top of the letter in a roadmap print. I tied the box with a black and white ribbon that looked like highway lines. I added a couple of little wooden flat cars the letter to finish it off. Super cute!

This project can be easily done using your own ideas and hot glue! The eyelet flower did require some simple hand sewing. You can do it!
