The End of a Tradition

I have been the creator of many traditions in my family but one that has been created by no other than five of my school age grands is coming to an end tomorrow!  I have been trying to soak up every memory and enjoy every moment of this loved tradition before it ends as we know it.

How did it come about? The morning bus stop for my school age grands who live down the street was moved to the end of my front walk this school year.

What became the tradition?  Early morning chats with five of my grandchildren, three of which are 100% of my granddaughters.

Why I loved this tradition?  I  was able to hear all about what they were excited about that day. I could give them a before school hug and an I love you before they headed off to school.  When the bus came rolling up they gathered their backpacks and echoes of  "love you grandma"  were heard as they climbed on the bus!

Why is it ending? Four of the grands will be attending a charter school next year and their moms will be driving them to school. (I'm thinking now that the mom's would probably love for me to continue the early morning chats as the carpool driver to the new charter school.)

What keeps my heart from totally breaking?  Despite ending the tradition as I and the children  know it I can still look forward to having two of my grandchildren catching the bus at the end of my walk next school year. For one little guy it will be his first year in school and his first time riding a school bus and he is going to have his bigger brother looking out for him.

Me? Although I am feeling sad about the loss of a tradition as I know it  I look forward to sharing the exciting new firsts on my front walk with my little grandson and his big third grade brother.

  1. How wonderful for your little grandson that he will have Grandma to reassure him every morning as he starts his new adventure! I think it is just wonderful that you have had this special treat every morning. Soak it up good!

  2. That's so awesome the bus stops right outside your door. Guaranteed visits with grandma that way. I'm SO jealous! :)

  3. You had a great opportunity until now, and the boys will love their chance to continue the tradition, too.

  4. There's a saying that "Life is a series of hello's and good-bye's" with this good-bye I'm sure there will be a hello to replace it.

  5. One thing about this grandmothering business--it's always changing. The little darlings just keep growing and changing and requiring different arrangements.
